The participation level refers to the degree or extent to which individuals or groups are actively involved or engaged in a particular activity, project, or process. In this video essay, Sophie, a member of Craft Core Group 3 and a student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, reflects on her personal journey of finding a sense of home and connection in a new environment. Specialising in text on textile (TXT), Sophie joined the group to explore the entanglements and interconnections between humans and non-human communities.
She shares how, after feeling displaced when she first arrived in the Netherlands, she gradually found a deeper connection to the land through gardening. This hands-on interaction with nature, especially in a controlled urban setting like the Netherlands, became a key way for her to feel grounded. Sophie discusses the complex relationship between humans, nature, and urban spaces, highlighting the balance between human needs and preserving natural environments. She expresses a desire to see cities become more wild and questions how we can move beyond the systems that restrict the natural world.
